Creating Your DJ Persona!

Introduction

As a DJ, you've got the opportunity to set yourself apart from the rest of the pack. Whether it's through your style, genre or MCing skills, we've compiled some tips for how to stand out from the crowd:

Your Style!

When it comes to style, you want to be unique. You want your audience to know what they're going to get when they see you on stage. That may mean being yourself or it could mean being original in your own way, but whatever the case is, don't copy other DJ's!

It's fine if you have a similar style as someone else—as long as it's not too much like theirs. If you're playing at an event where there are three other DJ's who all play house music, don't play house music too! This isn't a good idea because then everyone will be bored (except maybe the fourteenth person who really likes house music).

You should also make sure that your music matches up with the tastes of your audience; if you're playing dubstep in front of an audience full of 80-year olds who love classical jazz fusion music but their favorite color is blue instead of red then chances are those people won't enjoy themselves very much because they weren't expecting dubstep at all and only came for some classical jazz fusion songs that happened two hours ago when another dj played them right before yours so now everyone left except for one person who stayed behind because she loves both types of music.

Picking a Genre

Genre is an important consideration when choosing music for your set. When you play a genre that fits the space & crowd, the whole vibe will boost your comfort and confidence as a DJ. Measure your success using the ratio dancers : listeners on the floor. The more people dancing, the better your set. If you see that there are many listeners and not as many dancers, then it might be time to switch it up!

Here are some examples of different genres:

  • EDM (electronic dance music)

  • hip hop/rap

  • house music

So you want to MC?

If so, then this section is for you.

You’ve probably gotten the idea that being an MC is about saying things and doing things. But what does that mean exactly? Well, it turns out there is a lot of room for interpretation.

The most important part of being an MC is being yourself! Don't be afraid of your own voice or personality coming through in your performance—that's what makes it unique! You have a lot of influence over how people perceive the night, so don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

4 tips

  • Be original.

  • Don't copy other people's work and pass it off as your own, unless that person is directly involved with the project (e.g., if you are remixing or collaborating with a musician). This isn't just common courtesy, but also legal—you're placing yourself at risk of violating copyright laws if you don't give proper credit to the artist whose work you're using and distributing in your songs or mixes without permission from them or their publishing companies first.

  • Be unique, but don't be afraid to try new things either! You shouldn’t feel like there are any rules about what kind of content can be included in an electronic music mix; just make sure everything sounds good together so that no one feels left out when they listen to it later on their headphones while running on a treadmill at home during their morning jog session before heading off into work after breakfast (which also happens when they wake up each morning–but maybe not anymore once this article gets shared across social media platforms!).

  • Wear confidence like armor!

Conclusion

DJ's are not just people who play music. They are artists who can make or break a party. Reading the crowd along with strong technique and a well rounded collection of music, you can become a great dj.
